passed away on April 7, 2004 in Indianapolis. He was born in Arlington, VA to Arthur Lee and Evelyn McLendon Whelchel. He was married to Angela his loving wife of 28 years. He is also survived by daughter Rebecca Lee Whelchel, son, John David Whelchel both of Indianapolis. Step-daughter, Lorien Birelle Sheppard of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Lethario Lorien Sheppard also of Atlanta; sister Thelma Ruth Whelchel of Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Ellen Brady.John graduated from Terrell High School in Atlanta, GA in 1963 and attended Clayton Junior College in Morrow, GA from 1972-1975. John attended IUPUI in Indianapolis, IN from 1987 to 1989, with studies in electronics and computer. John served in the U.S. Army from March 1964 to January 1970, with an Honorable Discharge, and served in Okinawa during part of that time. John worked for Amercian Family Insurance Company in Indianapolis, IN for 14 years.
