Jean Marie Macy (Chandler) was born on May 6, 1935 in Indianapolis, Indiana, daughter of Omel and Lee Chandler Sr. She met her husband-to-be at Howe High School and was married at Grace UMC in February of 1954 to Roderick G. Macy. She worked at several jobs starting out as a typist for the Army at Ft. Harrison, church secretary for Fishers Methodist Church and finally as a Teachers Aide for First Grade at Nora Elementary where she passed on her passion for reading and love of learning to many young minds. Jean was always the innovator and brought people together. She helped start the Fourth of July Parade that became Fishers Festival, started students reading on the computers at Nora Elementary and organized church plays, pumpkin carving contests and countless other events. She was always involved in support of her family’s activities and instilled her lifelong love of the arts and music. She was an active member in many volunteer organizations over the years including Sarah’s Circle and several Book Clubs at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Meridian-Kessler women’s clubs and Assistance League. She could always be counted on to bring some food or listen in support of her family and friends. She extended her love and light to all she met and she will be dearly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Roderick Macy(Rod), her daughter Dr. Julie Towle, her son Eric Macy, her granddaughter Sara Towle and her two brothers Steven and Lee Chandler Jr.
Visitation will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church on 86th Street, Indianapolis from 2-4 pm on Wednesday December 12th with a memorial service to follow at 4 pm. Jean will be cremated and interred at Washington Park East Cemetery at a private service. She requests donations to Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School or Nora Elementary in lieu of flowers.
