Lavern Young was born on September 14, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born to William and Ida Mae Gerron. At two weeks of age, she was given to and raised by McGlother and Rosie Lee Harris. A product of Indianapolis Public Schools, she graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1959. At age 32, she graduated from the Indiana College of Business and Technology in 1973. She worked for three years for Rytex Company. In 1976, she went to work as an Administrative Assistant to Reverend Frank Alexander at the Edna Martin Christian Center. After two years, she became a full-time housewife.

Lavern, at an early age, professed her faith in Christ and was baptized. She was united in matrimony to Robert S. Young on June 26, 1976. In later years, Robert and Lavern joined Mt. Helm Missionary Baptist Church. One of her most joyous times in life was playing the piano for the Mt. Helm Senior Choir; to whom she dedicated 5 years with. She had a great love for its members and the messages of God’s love through music, but her aim and determination was to do whatever she could for Christ.

Lavern proudly raised two daughters and a son by a previous marriage. She was also a stepmother to six children by her husband, Robert, who preceded her in death.

Lavern Young departed this life on July 12, 2019 at the age of 77 years, 10 months and 2 days.

Lavern leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Anita Oakley; a sister, Janice Roberson; three brothers, Donald Gerron, Clinton Newson, and Joseph Newson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Monday, July 22, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W Moore Chapel. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time.
