Sharlene Joan (Lucas) Herbertz, age 85 of Greenwood, passed away peacefully at Franciscan Hospice House surrounded by family on Thursday, April 25th, 2019. Sharlene was born on July 3, 1933, in Indianapolis to the late Tildon and Clovie (Peffley) Lucas. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her former husband, Charles E. Johnson, husband of 15 years, Don L. Herbertz, and a great-grandson.

Sharlene graduated from Southport High School in 1951, marrying soon after she began her journey of raising three children, which was challenging at times. She was very creative and passionate about art, crafts, sewing, floral arrangements, and oil painting.  Sharlene was a “Jack of all Trades” having done occasional modeling, worked in sales at various businesses, was a Hostess, Server, Chef, and Bartender. Out of her love for animals, she was a long time Dog Nanny. Living in Florida at one time, she enjoyed the beaches and loved to travel. Sharlene will be remembered for her caretaking and giving, her friendships, as well as being a proud Mom and Grandma.

Sharlene is survived by her children, Chuck (Judy) Johnson of Martinsville, Mike (Cindy) Johnson of Mooresville, Sheryl (Mike) McKeand of Greenwood, Dean (Lora) Herbertz, Greenwood, and Darryl Herbertz, Louisville, 8 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, sister, Norieta Schultz, Indianapolis, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Garfield Park Community Church where she was a member, 743 Pleasant Run Pkwy S Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46203, Saturday, May 11, 2019, 2:00 to 3:30pm with a memorial service commencing  at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franciscan Hospice House Foundation or the Humane Society of Johnson County. Visit www.indianafuneralcare.com to share a favorite memory or to sign the online guest registry.

The family wishes to thank those who have extended emotional support and prayers for Sharlene during her battle with cancer, especially in her final days. Special thanks to the staff, nurses, and aids at the Franciscan Hospice House, Indianapolis South.

Sharlene was a special person who will be dearly missed. I’ve never known a more involved and loving grandmother and great grandmother. She was also an extremely creative woman, who loved to share her talents with her friends and grandkids. Knowing her, I can say she lived life to its fullest and she will leave her family and friends with great memories. Love you Sharlene.

Peace and love to all of you… We have so many memories of Sharlene, and her care for our babies. I’m choosing to not tell Crisco and will just let them meet at the Rainbow Bridge. I can already see him licking her face, like he always did! Thanks for sharing her with us, and letting us be a part of your family. Hugs to all of you.

To all the family. Words can never say how much I miss my friend. We shared so much. We started and ended our Red/White Hat group together. I have all the scrapbooks she was so dedicated in keeping for 15 years. So much fun together. I miss my friend. God be with you all.
